Sensor Access Project: Dubai Airport Free Zone – UHF Readers

Posted in Case Studies, News

A GuardPoint Pro system using UHF readers has been installed and commissioned by Alpha-Plus Security at the Dubai Free Zone Parking Facilities
The reserved parking areas for the tenants are world-class facilities and therefore required long range vehicle identification readers.

About The Free ZoneDubai Airport Free Zone where UHF Readers were installed

A free-trade zone is a geographic area where goods may be landed, handled, manufactured or reconfigured, and re-exported without the intervention of the customs authorities.

The Dubai Airport Free zone authority or DAFZA is the leading free zone services provider in the Middle East. Investment incentives and tax exemptions are just some of DAFZA’s exclusivities. The companies within the DAFZA free zone achieve greater functional efficiency and lower operational costs.

DAFZA’s Parking Facilities

The original parking facility was abused by the tenants as the barriers could be controlled remotely, allowing people to enter whenever they chose. There were many cases of loss and damage to the parking facilities due to lack of monitoring.

Access for authorised personnel only

To add the level of security that is required to ensure the car park was managed correctly, long range readers UHF readers were chosen as the credentials could easily be placed inside the car windscreen. UHF cards are an advantage to the system because they don’t use batteries which need to be replaced.  The uPass UHF reader from Nedap was chosen, with a read range of 5 metres. The benefit of a long range reader is that the vehicle does not have to stop to present their card, ensuring a smooth flow through the barriers.

The UHF readers are connected back to the Sensor Access control panels which are controlled overall by the GuardPoint Pro software. The GuardPoint Pro software controls all aspects of the car park administration, making the enrollment of cars to the system very simple. The GuardPoint Pro software also allows full reporting of the usage of the car park as well as allowing high-level security features such as anti-passback and ’cause and effect’ reactions. The GuardPointPro car parking module also manages the capacity of the car park and ensures companies can only use their allotted spaces.

The system was installed by Alpha Plus Security & Alarm Sys who provides professional security solutions for local authorities, industrial and commercial clients.

The Key Benefits of Using Fingerprint Biometrics in Access Control

Posted in News, Products, Security Tips

Are you considering whether to upgrade your access control system to use biometrics?

The key benefits of using biometrics as opposed to using standard proximity credentials are:

  1.  Fingerprint characteristics cannot be guessed and are very difficult to steal.
  2.  Your access credentials cannot be lost or forgotten.
  3. Using biometrics can be a cost saving because you do not need to buy any proximity cards or tags.
  4. Fingerprints biometric readers are simple and intuitive to use.
  5. Online biometric systems can easily be expanded. Fingerprint templates can easily be downloaded from the main system when new readers are added.
  6. Using fingerprints for access control is now more accepted amongst people due to the increased usage on devices such as  mobile phones.
  7. Using biometrics with an online access control system gives a clear audit trail with a definitive answer on who committed a security breach.
  8. Cost savings can also be made in terms of using biometrics with time and attendance. It prevents cardholders from using other people’s cards.

Both of Sensor Access’ access control solutions can be integrated with fingerprint biometrics. When considering fingerprint biometrics it is important to consider the environment and the people who will be using them. If the environment or the user’s hands are very dirty it would be worth considering readers which can read the finger a few layer of skin below the surface. For situations of where people do not want fingerprint data stored centrally, it would be worth considering storing their own fingerprint on a smart card that they carry with them. Using a smart card which carries your fingerprint means the reader itself no longer need to store the finger templates which means no limitation to its capacity.

New Project Secured: Spire Healthcare, UK

Posted in Case Studies, News

Spire Healthcare is a leading provider of private healthcare, with 39 private hospitals throughout the UK. The company is built on a proud heritage of over 25 years’ experience of running successful private hospitals. Sensor and one of our partners have taken on a new project test site with the possible expansion to all sites nationwide.

The test site is comprised of 3x VC-4, 1 x VC-2 controllers which were used in conjunction with 12 SF-mini readers. VantagePoint Enterprise edition was used with an added workstation for the administration of the system. Spire Health Care wanted a fully TCP/IP solution which could be expanded upon in order to fit with their existing network. This ensured it was simple to use, and the process of opening and closing all doors from inputs for fire tests was enabled. VC controllers were chosen because they could utilise existing network and have the ability to communicate with each other without a server. After an initial period, we expect this site to expand with a nationwide roll out.

The Benefits of Anti-Pass Back in Access Control

Posted in News, Security Tips

Anti-Pass Back (APB) is to prevent the cardholder from handing his card to another person to use. To use anti-pass back, you would typically have a reader on both the entrance and the exit sides of the door. Once the cardholder has used his card on the entrance, the card cannot be used again at the entrance until it has been shown to have used the exit.
Anti-pass back (APB) is most commonly used in car parks and on turnstiles on construction sites or sites using the access control system as a form of time and attendance.

APB is a proven and effective way of managing car park spaces as it prevents a second car access on the same credential. For T&A situations it can also prevent people from presenting their friend/colleague’s cards as it will not work again to allow the late colleague through unless the badge was clocked out again.

There are a few types of anti-pass back known as hard, soft and timed. In a timed setup, the cardholder is only blocked out for a set period of time on an APB violation. Soft anti-pass back still allows the cardholder access yet notifies the access control systems operator that this has occurred. In hard anti-pass, the APB rules are strictly followed: cardholders are denied access to a violation of the APB rule.

When using anti-pass back, it is always best practice to wire a door contact. The access control system can be set to only move a cardholder from one area to another unless it sees a valid card followed by a movement in the door rather than just the valid card being presented.

Both VantagePoint and GuardPoint Pro can use all types of anti-pass back. VantagePoint is unique in that the controllers can update APB movements to each of its controllers over an ethernet and without the server software running.

How GuardPoint Pro Integrates with Traka Key Management

Posted in News

The Traka Key Management solution is designed to provide access control to keys, allowing only authorised users granted access to their selected keys. The GuardPoint Pro solution can be used in conjunction with Traka to provide the user interface to allocate these keys.
Using a key management platform has many benefits over conventional keys: the key management platform system automatically records when a key is used and by whom it is used by on a database making all staff accountable.
